Automatic vs Manual Coffee Machine

Here’s a quick guide to the automatic vs manual coffee machine. A manual espresso machine, which is also called a ‘piston machine’, generates the required pressure from the manual force of the brewer, who must operate a lever.

Manual coffee machines are rarely seen in cafes anymore, since they fell out of favour in the 1940s, due to the invention of the automatic coffee machine. Automatic coffee machines don’t require the brewer to operate a lever and instead generate pressure either through steam power or a motorised pump.

Different Automatic Coffee Machine Types

image of the best automatic coffee machine making coffee

Semi Automatic Espresso Machines

Semi automatic machines are really popular machines on the market. They give the brewer some control over the strength and flavour of their morning brew, by adjusting the amount of water used and time spent pulling the shot. Keep reading to find the best semi automatic espresso machine.

Fully Automatic Espresso Machines

If you’re looking for a machine that’s super easy to use, then this type of machine should be well suited for you. These machines differ from semi automatic machines since the water is measured for you. The best fully automatic coffee machine will produce a delicious coffee at the touch of a button.

Super Automatic Espresso Machines

As the name suggests, these machines simplify your coffee making process even further and are some of the best automatic coffee makers. Not only do they produce a perfect espresso shot at the touch of a button, but they can also grind your beans and froth the milk.

Read on to discover the best super automatic coffee machine for you.

Drip/Filter Coffee Machines

Drip or filter coffee machines offer a cost effective way to enjoy machine coffee. A drip machine, unsurprisingly, drips water over the coffee grinds. You don’t get much control with this machine but you can choose how much water to use. If you’re looking for the best cheap automatic coffee machine, you could consider a drip machine, although most coffee lovers agree that these low budget machines don’t usually produce the best quality brew.

Features of the Best Automatic Espresso Machines

The best automatic coffee brewer will look good on your countertop, have a durable build quality, be easy to clean, and easy to use.

Boiler Type & Power

When making an espresso, pressure is important in achieving that perfect brew with a nice crema. The standard amount of pressure for a professional coffee machine is usually nine bars. You can achieve a great brew with less pressure than this, but it’s worth considering if you desire to replicate cafe quality espresso.

When buying a coffee machine, you will need to decide between a single boiler vs double boiler. If you have a double boiler machine you can pull your espresso shot at the same time as you use the steamer wand to steam your milk — with a single boiler, you’ll need to wait.

Another thing to consider is the amount of time a machine will take to heat up so that it’s ready to start pulling the shot. This time varies from machine to machine, and could be important if you’re frequently rushing in the morning. Read our reviews below to find the best super automatic espresso machine, fully automatic, and best semi automatic coffee machine Australia has to offer.

Pressurised or Non-Pressurised Filter Basket

Pressurised filter baskets use two walls within the basket. One uses a mesh design, while the other typically has a single hole, which pressurises the water. A pressurised basket is typically found in cheaper machines since they are much more forgiving with an inconsistent grind or pre ground coffee, as well providing a simpler setup for someone who is not familiar with the intricacies of brewing coffee.

A non pressurised filter basket is what you will find in a professional espresso machine. These kinds of baskets are pressurised only from the grind size and tamp firmness. To use a machine with this basket, you will need a coffee grinder, preferably a quality burr variety. Non pressurised baskets require more precision from the brewer but do produce a fuller-bodied extraction, as long as the conditions are right. Read here to learn more.

Do you believe precision is key for a perfect cup of coffee? Find great scales for coffee here to get started!

Programs

Automatic and semi automatic machines usually have lots of different programmable settings, such as temperature, size of cup, and ratio. Some machines have a one touch program for different coffee drinks e.g. latte, and some allow for you to customise these programs. If you like to make your coffee quickly and with little input from you, you may want to look for a machine with drink programs.

Super-automatic coffee makers will have even more adjustable settings and programs. These machines usually allow you to select your grind size which will be processed in the built-in grinder. Simply select the drink you want, and the machine will take care of everything.

Milk Frother

If you drink anything other than espressos or Americanos, then you will need to be able to froth your milk. Your coffee machine should come with a steam wand that’s easy to clean and not awkward to use. Super automatic machines take this process out of your hands and froth the milk for you without you needing to use a steam wand.

Find our top milk frother recommendations here!

Grinder

Grind size and consistency is super important to ensure you’re always getting a top quality brew. To achieve a great grind you will need a great grinder. However, it’s possible to get an automatic espresso machine with grinder and all super automatic machines will come with a built in grinder. Super machines will also tamp the grinds for you to ensure it’s always consistent.

Read our full coffee grinder buying guide here!

Ease of Cleaning

Nobody likes to spend a long time cleaning up after making their coffee. Most machines will utilise easy to clean stainless steel but look at the design to see if there will be any awkward external features that could trap dirt. All machines will require descaling at some point, more frequently if you live in a hard water area. Some machines come with a cleaning function to help with this process.
